When Friday rolled around and I still hadn’t made up with Vesta and Mollie, a part of me wondered, a bit frantically, how long this would stretch out. What if they never budged? What if they never told me what was going on? Vincent was right—everyone was entitled to their secrets. But was their secret worth losing our friendship over? Was I the kind of friend who would force it out of them?

The situation with Mom wasn’t any better. We hadn’t spoken to each other at all yesterday—I’d heard her rummaging downstairs, but I hadn’t gone down to investigate. When I finally got thirsty enough to venture to the kitchen, she’d already locked herself in the guest room for the night.

At lunch, I’d been surprised to find Vincent already sitting in the library when I walked in, leaning his chair back onto two legs. He’d had his journal in front of him, tapping his pencil lazily against it. His green eyes had slid to mine. “Took you long enough.”

Despite worrying about what I should do with my friends, I found I didn’t mind this new lunchtime routine at all.

I couldn’t quite pinpoint what had changed between Vincent and me, but something had. Maybe it was the fact that he started to smile around me—something so innocent and yet so abnormal for him. But when he smiled, he seemed so much more human. Easier to relate to. Easier to relax around.

And it was easier to be in his presence. Maybe it was because those uncomfortable conversations were out of the way. But as we talked through lunch, I’d felt more relaxed than ever.

“When are we going to watch Evil Killer Babies?” I asked as Vincent pulled out of the school’s parking lot, fixing him with an expectant stare. I’d done a good job of keeping my head down as we climbed into the truck, still too afraid anyone would see. Sure, I was more relaxed than ever, but that didn’t mean I wanted to face everything just yet. “You’ve already accepted the offer, can’t back out now.”

“The title could’ve been much more creative,” he said with a little sideways frown. “It’s quite unimpressive.”

“Judgey. Once you start watching the movie, I’m sure it’ll be a fast favorite.” I settled in my seat, watching as he turned left onto Brewer. “Hallow’s the other way, dude.”

He snorted. “I have to stop home real quick, if that’s okay.”

Wait. Home? Like…where his dad would be? My voice was clipped with panic I tried to shove down. “Why?”

“I just need to check something. It’ll take a minute. Hopefully less.” He cast a glance in my direction before settling back on the road. “Hey, what’s the deal with the ties? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a girl wear so many ties.”

I wasn’t sure if he was deliberately trying to change the subject or not, but my brain refused to slip off that path for a long moment. A minute. Hopefully less. You’ll just sit in the car.
