When Friday rolled around and I still hadnât made up with Vesta and Mollie, a part of me wondered, a bit frantically, how long this would stretch out. What if they never budged? What if they never told me what was going on? Vincent was rightâeveryone was entitled to their secrets. But was their secret worth losing our friendship over? Was I the kind of friend who would force it out of them?
The situation with Mom wasnât any better. We hadnât spoken to each other at all yesterdayâIâd heard her rummaging downstairs, but I hadnât gone down to investigate. When I finally got thirsty enough to venture to the kitchen, sheâd already locked herself in the guest room for the night.
At lunch, Iâd been surprised to find Vincent already sitting in the library when I walked in, leaning his chair back onto two legs. Heâd had his journal in front of him, tapping his pencil lazily against it. His green eyes had slid to mine. âTook you long enough.â
Despite worrying about what I should do with my friends, I found I didnât mind this new lunchtime routine at all.
I couldnât quite pinpoint what had changed between Vincent and me, but something had. Maybe it was the fact that he started to smile around meâsomething so innocent and yet so abnormal for him. But when he smiled, he seemed so much more human. Easier to relate to. Easier to relax around.
And it was easier to be in his presence. Maybe it was because those uncomfortable conversations were out of the way. But as we talked through lunch, Iâd felt more relaxed than ever.
âWhen are we going to watch Evil Killer Babies?â I asked as Vincent pulled out of the schoolâs parking lot, fixing him with an expectant stare. Iâd done a good job of keeping my head down as we climbed into the truck, still too afraid anyone would see. Sure, I was more relaxed than ever, but that didnât mean I wanted to face everything just yet. âYouâve already accepted the offer, canât back out now.â
âThe title couldâve been much more creative,â he said with a little sideways frown. âItâs quite unimpressive.â
âJudgey. Once you start watching the movie, Iâm sure itâll be a fast favorite.â I settled in my seat, watching as he turned left onto Brewer. âHallowâs the other way, dude.â
He snorted. âI have to stop home real quick, if thatâs okay.â
Wait. Home? Likeâ¦where his dad would be? My voice was clipped with panic I tried to shove down. âWhy?â
âI just need to check something. Itâll take a minute. Hopefully less.â He cast a glance in my direction before settling back on the road. âHey, whatâs the deal with the ties? I donât think Iâve ever seen a girl wear so many ties.â
I wasnât sure if he was deliberately trying to change the subject or not, but my brain refused to slip off that path for a long moment. A minute. Hopefully less. Youâll just sit in the car.
